James novel is . . . well . . . masterful

The MasterBy Colm TóibínMcClelland & Stewart,338 pages, $34.99Colm Tóibín says the seed for his latest novel was sown while he was at Yaddo, a writers' colony in upstate New York, where he was struggling to complete The Blackwater Lightship (his 1999 Booker-nominated novel about a young man in contemporary Ireland dying of AIDS). To avoid the offensive early-morning good cheer of his fellow writers, he took to staying in his room, and turned to the books on the shelves for something "really boring" to get him through his residency.
