Send in the clowns
It's not surprising that clowns and the circus have long attracted the interest of visual artists. Like circus performers, artists are by definition nomads and social outcasts, economically marginalized creators with often extraordinary skills who must nonetheless sing for their supper and survive at the mercy of the crowd. As individuals, artists, too, are scrupulous observers of the fakery of the world, all too painfully aware of the temptations and perils of playing to the audience.
