Sequel sings just as sweetly

It was nominated for a National Book Award in 1999, and I still bear a grudge against Ha Jin -- and even Ha Jin's book, Waiting -- for beating him out. Set like Haruf's first two novels in the small town of Holt, Colo., Plainsong introduces us to high school teacher Tom Guthrie, who tries to keep life normal for his two little boys as his wife sinks into depression. In a secondary plot, the McPheron brothers, Harold and Raymond, live alone on a ranch outside Holt.
