When Johnny comes marching home
It was a peculiar week for Americans, a week of promises broken and breakable, justice evaded and an eerie signal of an unspeakable moral shift.A lame-duck U.S. president announced that 70,000 of the 180,000 U.S. troops stationed in Europe and Asia were scheduled to return home (with no guarantees about where they're headed next; gee, I wonder), while some reservists back from Iraq were told their day jobs were gone, sorry. A few low-level American functionaries were being tried in military court for torturing Iraqis at Abu Ghraib, while courts in the United States, Britain and France pondered trying "their" Guantanamo prisoners using "evidence" obtained under torture.
