GILLER PRIZE: SHORTLIST
TORONTO -- It's official: The Germans are taking over the world's literature.First was yesterday's announcement that a German-language writer, Austrian Elfriede Jelinek, has won the Nobel Prize in literature. Then came yesterday's press conference in Toronto, where it was revealed that German-owned publishing giant Random House of Canada Ltd. nearly swept the shortlist of the Giller Prize, generally regarded as Canada's most glamorous literary award, with books published by its imprints taking four out of six spots on the list.
