Banks's new science-fiction novel where the villain begins to slaughter hostages as a means of forcing a group of aliens to divulge the hero's whereabouts. Human spectators are sickened, but the aliens only react with polite bafflement. They don't know where the hero is, and don't understand how watching a lot of people get killed will help anyone find out.
