Debt powers April retail sales

Canadian retail sales unexpectedly rose to a record high in April as debt-loving consumers like Randy Mickevicius provided the lift.Retailers rang up $30.9-billion in business, up 1.5 per cent from March -- nearly triple the consensus Bay Street forecast -- Statistics Canada reported yesterday.
