The Top 1000
As always, you can find reasons to cheer and reasons to worry as you scan our annual Top 1000, a ranking of Canada's biggest publicly traded companies by total dollar profit. The impact of soaring oil and gas prices is easy to see, starting with EnCana Corp., No. 1 for the second year running. Booming demand from Asia fattened the bottom lines of other resource producers as well. You can see further proof of that in the rankings of top income trusts (page 83) and our new investing tables (page 95). Banks and insurance companies also had another solid year, resulting in hefty pay packages for many of their executives (page 81).
