A copyright levy on the MP3 player
The MP3 player, an electronic gizmo that can store a seemingly infinite amount of digitally reproduced music, is a godsend for listeners who enjoy copying songs from their CDs or downloading them from the Internet for every occasion. To this godsend, add a windfall. Canadians who bought iPods and other MP3 players between December of 2003 and December of 2004 are now in line for a partial refund, as much as $25 for the models that hold more than 10 gigabytes. And they owe it all to an outdated Copyright Act, which may or may not be brought up to speed in this respect.
