Churches liable in abuse cases
TORONTO and VANCOUVER -- Churches that helped run aboriginal residential schools must share the liability for sexual abuse suffered in those institutions, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled yesterday. The top court overturned a B.C. Court of Appeal decision that said the federal government was responsible for all the financial damages awarded a man who suffered sexual abuse at the hands of a dormitory supervisor at the Alberni Indian Residential School on Vancouver Island in the 1960s.
