Why is Paris burning?

For two weeks, violence raged nightly in the suburbs of France's cities. And for the first time in half a century, France's leaders invoked a state of emergency. Police are now armed with broad new powers; even as they try to calm rioters with promises of jobs and social programs, they enforce curfews and conduct raids without warrants.
