Drab and dull, yes, but we write a mean novel
I doubt we'll ever grow tired of being told that Toronto is a great book city. An article called "Canada's Literary Lights" in Vanity Fair magazine's current on-line edition is the latest to tell us, rather breathlessly, how great we are, but it's come late to the game. Every Torontonian with even the mildest interest in writing already knows about the city's flourishing bookishness. Toronto may be the only city where novels are integral to high art, the alternative scene and mainstream culture all at the same time -- think Michael Redhill, Derek McCormack and Margaret Atwood. So much of our identity is bound up with novels.
