Why are liberals laughing?

The movie Brokeback Mountain, it is now common to note, isn't just a film, it's a decisive cultural moment. Ang Lee's gay-themed western has earned seven Golden Globe nominations, and best-picture honours from at least nine critics' associations, including New York and Los Angeles, and is considered a front-runner for the Academy Awards. Even publications such as the Catholic News Service and Christianity Today gave it positive reviews. More than just a gay love story, it's a gay story with a tragic ending, a reminder of the murder of Wyoming native Matthew Shepard, who was murdered in 1998 in an anti-gay hate crime. Support of the film is, inevitably, seen as a vote against bigotry.
