CHILD EXPLOITATION

Toronto police work leads to U.S. arrest

Staff and The Associated Press

The Toronto Police Service's child exploitation unit played a key role in helping Interpol track an alleged pedophile wanted on an international arrest warrant to New Jersey, according to reports.

Wayne Nelson Corliss, 47, of Union City, N.J., was arrested early yesterday, just two days after the international police agency made a public appeal for help in identifying a photograph of a middle-aged, stocky white man, with grey hair and glasses. The search for him began in 2006 when Norwegian police seized about 100 photos that allegedly depicted him engaging in sex with young boys.

Mr. Corliss has been described as an actor and comedy writer who sometimes played Santa Claus.

One of the Toronto police unit's image analysis experts helped link the photos to the offender and his eventual location in New Jersey, reports say.

The U.S. media jumped on the story when the Toronto experts used image analysis to trace a child victim of abuse, within 36 hours, to Raleigh, N.C., several years ago.
