BOWLER, Marilyn Carscallen Crang
Died Monday, March 10, 2008, surrounded by her family, at home on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
Born June 5, 1926 in Toronto, Canada to Maude Miriam Shepley Carscallen and James Goulding Crang, sister to the late James Carscallen Crang.
She graduated from Victoria College at the University of Toronto in 1950 and on June 16, 1950 married Joseph Bowler Jr.
Early in their married life, Marilyn, an avid outdoors woman, devoted much of her time to conservation and environmental issues. She was President of the Federated Conservationists of Westchester County, working to save land from over-development and for use as open space of for the public.
After moving to Hilton Head Island in 1972 from Briarcliff Manor, NY, Marilyn became intricately involved in Joe's portrait business and took on the role as his sole representative . . . partners in work, life and love.
Acutely aware of the importance of art in education she helped establish an Artist in Residence program at Sea Pines Academy. She was very involved in the Island School Council for the Arts and worked for more than 25 years to help the ''Evening of the Arts'' . . . always sharing of her time and knowledge, and always willing to learn something new.
''At 81 years of age, I feel that I have experienced a wonderful, long life, better than 99.99% of those who have walked this earth. I have had a fabulous life, which, of course, has included some serious heart-break. I am deeply grateful to the family I had growing up and my wonderful family and friends now. I plan to continue living as I have, working with Joe and keeping the household running with wonderful help, and sharing time with those I care so much about.'' She did just that.
Survived by her husband of 57 years, Joseph Bowler Jr., two daughters Jolyn Louise Bowler and Bevan Brynne Bowler, one grandson Coby James Wakefield and preceded in death by her grandson Joseph Bowler Wakefield.
In recognition of Marilyn, donations may be made to the Tidewater Hospice Foundation, Bluffton, South Carolina.
A private gathering of friends and loved ones is being planned for a later time.
