Smooth jazz, rough ride

How did the term "smooth jazz" become an insult?Usually meant to describe soulful, melodically accessible jazz that relies on electric instruments and funk-derived rhythms, smooth is perhaps the most popular subgenre in jazz. It includes all sorts of ensembles, but tends to prefer guitar, soprano sax, synthesizer or vocals, and invariably emphasizes lush and pretty over brash and abrasive.
