In the long run

Every year, thousands upon thousands of people take part in one of humanity's oldest and toughest athletic competitions: the marathon.Not all of those who try to run the 42 kilometres and 195 metres succeed. Many who do will stagger -- sweating, wheezing and aching -- across the finish line, and will spend the next few days utterly fatigued.
