Inco invests $115-million to reduce sulphur dioxide

Nickel producer Inco Ltd. is investing $115-million to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions from its Sudbury, Ont., operations by 34 per cent. The company said Thursday that scrubbing technology will lower allowable emissions from the current regulatory limit of 265 kilotons annually to 175 kilotons. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of December and could be fully operational by early fall. "We are committed to doing even more to improve our environmental performance, and continuing to invest in new and innovative solutions to reach our goal of a 75-per-cent reduction from current emission limits by 2015," Inco said. Since the Ontario government introduced the Countdown Acid Rain Program in 1986, Inco said it has spent close to $1-billion to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions at its Sudbury operations.
