Curiously comical

A Spot of BotherBy Mark HaddonDoubleday Canada,354 pages, $32.95Mark Haddon's first novel, the literary bestseller The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, is a triumph of voice and compassion with a narrator so awkwardly compelling and vulnerable -- an autistic boy of 15 who unearths some unpleasant truths about his disintegrating family -- it's impossible not to root for him. It would be unreasonable to expect Haddon's follow-up to demonstrate the same ingenuous charm, freshness or poignancy, but it is perhaps inevitable that Curious Incident fans will experience some sense of letdown with A Spot of Bother, a quite different animal.
