Republicans scramble to stanch page scandal
WASHINGTON -- Republican leaders seeking to contain the congressional page scandal launched a full-blown damage-control effort yesterday, keenly aware of a fast-approaching election day."The buck stops here," said Republican House of Representatives Speaker Dennis Hastert, but he brushed off the rising chorus of opposition demands that he resign for failing to probe the situation when he was first told that former Florida congressman Mark Foley was having "overly friendly" Internet chats with an underage male page.
