'Novel' thinking needed on both sides

Stories matter. Through stories we reflect the world back to ourselves, and create a framework around which we build a system of morality and truths -- and yet we underestimate the role that different kinds of stories play in national conflicts. In the "clash of civilizations" of the present age, a battle is occurring not just on the ground, but on the narrative plane -- a contest that has less to do with faith, than it does the kind of story each society uses. Story provides the very basis of a community -- and its defence.
