The DissidentBy Nell FreudenbergerEcco Press, 429 pages, $32.95The delights and disappointments of Nell Freudenberger's first novel both hinge on the old cliché about writing what you know. Freudenberger confounds this debatable advice. In The Dissident, she writes superbly about people and places that seem a world apart from the one inhabited by a young U.S. writer who attended Harvard. It's only when the author of the 2003 story collection Lucky Girls focuses on people and places she might be expected to be familiar with that her story fails to come alive.
