Freudenberger confounds this debatable advice. In The Dissident, she writes superbly about people and places that seem a world apart from the one inhabited by a young U.S. writer who attended Harvard. It's only when the author of the 2003 story collection Lucky Girls focuses on people and places she might be expected to be familiar with that her story fails to come alive.
