The Tenderness of WolvesBy Stef PenneyViking Canada, 464 pages, $36Not that it would make any difference, but I'd be curious to know what brought a woman born and raised in Edinburgh to set her first novel in a village north of Georgian Bay in the winter of 1867. It sure as hell wasn't the appealing climate. And if dramatic history was her game, the bloody theatrics of the Civil War that had just taken place south of the border might have been a more obvious choice.
