Housing slump makes U.S. shoppers cautious

WASHINGTON -- The saga of the Panasonic 42-inch plasma high-definition television goes a long way toward decoding the enigma of the U.S. consumer this holiday season.Circuit City Stores Inc. of Richmond, Va., put a price tag of $1,760 (U.S.) on the TV at the end of the summer. By October, Best Buy Co. Inc. of Richfield, Minn., was offering the same model for $100 less. Then, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. of Bentonville, Ark., trumped its rivals, dropping the price to $1,294 in early November.
