A year when age wasn't a liability

Hand me my bifocals and turn up my hearing aid, dearies, I can't believe what's going on at the movies.In Rocky Balboa, writer/director/star Sylvester Stallone dares us to believe that a 60-year-old fighter could take on a world heavyweight champ 35 years his junior and go the distance. He's old but he has heart (and, apparently, can bend the laws of nature). So not only is Rocky not laughed out of the ring, he's rooted for; not only is he not killed outright, he dominates many rounds; and not only is the plot exactly the same as the first Rocky, beat for beat, but audiences don't seem to mind. The new version made $51-million in its first couple of weeks (all figures U.S.) in North America.
