Mozart magic, native spirit
When Mozart sat down to write The Magic Flute in 1791, European explorers were already snapping up Pacific Northwest objects. Aboriginal clothing was prized as art and artifact -- including the Nuu-chah-nulth hat that predated the now familiar Maquinna style. Only 10 of the older version are known to exist. Nine are in European museums. But the 10th, a replica, is worn by one of Sarastro's followers in the Vancouver Opera's Northwest Coast adaptation of The Magic Flute.
