Trapped in a medieval nightmare

KANDAHAR, AFGHANISTAN -- A scurrying sound comes from a pile of trash heaped in a courtyard of Sarpoza prison. Then an animal the size of a small cat scrabbles its way out and stands frozen for a moment in the sunshine. It takes a few seconds to identify the creature as a rat, by which time the filthy thing has vanished back into a warren of crumbling bricks that serves as Kandahar's main detention facility.
