Calling all cellphone connoisseurs

SMALL: THE NEW BIG 1 Compared with our modern obsession with miniaturization, everything in the 1970s was big: collars, mustaches, Richard Simmons, and most definitely cellular telephones. The DynaTAC 8000X, developed by Motorola Inc. in 1973, was more than 22 centimetres tall, 12 centimetres thick and weighed more than a kilogram. Standing on a Manhattan sidewalk on April 3, 1973, Motorola engineer Martin Cooper hefted the prototype to his ear and placed the first ever cellular phone call. Naturally, Mr. Cooper rang up his chief rival, AT&T Inc. researcher Joel Engel. Unfortunately for Mr. Engel, he was not yet able to text message Mr. Cooper a frowning emoticon in response.
