Lessons in (farmers') market economy

By our third and last week of eating local foods within a 100-mile radius of the city, the 100 Mile Diet seemed ripe with possibility.Farmers were coming out of the woodwork to tell me about their specialty crops. One guy had figured out a way to grow kiwis bursting with flavour. Another e-mailed with news of a plan for a truly local microbrew. "Good news for your husband," he wrote. "There is an Ontario farmer who has just started growing hops for beer."
