Chick lit - or chick lite?

The chick-lit combine has been chugging along for nearly a decade, churning out thousands of pink-jacketed pretenders to Bridget Jones's throne. The genre has provoked a number of literary catfights. There are warring anthologies: Elizabeth Merrick's This is Not Chick Lit, an attempt to showcase serious writing by women, was promptly countered by This is Chick Lit, a stroppy defence of girls-just-wanna-have-fun books.
