Calgary Zoo coddles new baby elephant

Calgary -- Staff at the Calgary Zoo will be keeping an extra close eye on its elephant herd with the addition yesterday morning of a bouncing 140-kilogram baby. The female calf and its mother, Maharani, a 17-year-old Asian elephant, are being kept in a quiet nursery stall to encourage bonding and increase the baby's chance of survival. In 2004, Maharani gave birth to the zoo's last baby elephant, but the animal died within a month, due to an infection after its mother rejected it.
