Mayrand not aggressive or controversial, colleagues say

Brainy, unassuming and devoted to the law are adjectives being used to describe Canada's new Chief Electoral Officer, Marc Mayrand. Troublesome and controversial are not.After 25 relatively quiet years in the ranks of the senior public service, he was thrust into a harsh spotlight this week after ruling that Muslim women can keep their veils on while voting. Mr. Mayrand, who has said he will not use his office's extraordinary emergency powers to change the policy, has been pilloried by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, while a committee of Parliament has demanded that he back down. It's hardly the quiet baptism that Mr. Mayrand's former friends and colleagues had expected.
