Toronto Star putting end to Star P.M. download

The Toronto Star is ending its free, downloadable afternoon newspaper, called Star P.M., a little over a year after its launch. Canada's largest newspaper by circulation began experimenting with the format last fall in an effort to gain more readers. The concept has also been explored by papers in Europe, with printable news summaries aimed at commuter audiences. Torstar Corp., parent of the Star, said the last edition will be produced Oct. 17. "Time moves on, technology advances, and new, improved products replace old ones," Star editor-in-chief Fred Kuntz said in an e-mail to subscribers. Efforts will be put into expanding the paper's website and production of a mobile version, readable on cellphones, the company said. TS.B (TSX) rose 1 cent to $19.80.
