Discounts on frozen debt vary widely

Two major financial institutions have taken big writedowns on their troubled commercial paper, setting widely different discounts on the securities.As more holders of third-party, asset-backed commercial paper take accounting charges to cut the value of the paper on their books, a range of roughly 8 per cent to 15 per cent appears to be emerging as a typical level by which to discount it.
