Border rules will make U.S. safer, Chertoff says

WASHINGTON -- Americans will be safer next month after tougher document requirements are imposed at Canada-U.S. land-border crossings, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said yesterday.As of Feb. 1, Canadians and returning Americans will need both an official document bearing a photograph, such as a driver's licence, in addition to proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate, at all land crossings.
