Don't go worrying about the 's' word

There's nothing like a handful of humiliated banks revealing billions of dollars in losses, another spate of negative news on the U.S. housing, credit and consumer fronts, or a Fed chairman admitting that the situation is worse than he thought, to trigger new fears that the U.S. economy is grinding to a halt.
