Adera is taking cues from upscale resort towns (think Whistler village) with Salus in Surrey.

The development is offering a resort-style residential community with all the comforts and convenience of city living while maintaining easy access to expansive green space.

And all of this is centred around its own private spa.

"We drew our architectural inspiration for Salus from Whistler, giving it a west coast resort feel, so we thought why not include destination resort-style amenities, which in turn led us to the spa idea," says Eric Andreasen, vice-president of marketing and sales for Adera.

"Spas are a growing phenomenon; they used to be something elite and exotic, but they have definitely moved into the mainstream, appealing to men as well as women," he says.

Salus (Latin for wellness) is taking the standard of "amenity building" to a whole new level, says Mr. Adreasen. The Club Aqua building offers massage, yoga and spa treatments, as well as a two-storey fireplace, lounge area, library, fitness facility, lap pool and entertainment room with a 3,500 sq. ft. rooftop patio.

"This is an active facility, and an anchor point for the community," says Mr. Adreasen.

In its completion, Salus will consist of 238 apartment flats and 160 city homes arranged on a 10-acre site dotted with gardens, ponds, old-growth trees and hiking trails.

"The entire feel of Salus is tied to the spa aesthetic," says Mr. Adreasen.

"We're targeting like-minded individuals concerned with health & wellness, which is why it was so important to incorporate natural elements like outdoor footpaths and large trees.

It has really struck a chord with people," he says.

Salus has also incorporated Built Green features such as a sustainable landscaping design, solar preheated hot water, comprehensive recycling and a CAN car-share program.

"We are really trying to provide two things here," says Mr. Adreasen, who recognizes Surrey as a "natural market place" because of its already defined community with, "a real neighbourhood feel" and easy access to shopping, schools, recreation and transit.z

"One, we want to provide suitable homes for the neighbourhood, and second, we want to add something extra in the way of azmenities."
