VANCOUVER -- When the members of R.E.M. launch their world tour tomorrow in Vancouver, they will be on familiar ground. The band has recorded a portion of its past three albums here, including its most recent disc. Accelerate, a critical and commercial success, has returned R.E.M. toward a state of relevance it hasn't known since the 1990s. The process of making the recording has also solidified the band and ensured its continued existence after a few shaky years.
