A concertmaster bows out
Violinist Jacques Israelievitch must surely be one of Toronto's most visible classical musicians. And yet he is heard only rarely.For 20 years, the French-born concertmaster of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra has been the last musician to walk onstage, just before performances begin. With a neat little bow to the audience - drawing a smattering of applause - he quickly oversees the tuning of the orchestra. Then, when the conductor enters, Israelievitch takes his seat, at the front of the violins.
