Conventions and defeats

Ottawa -- In his essay on the pointlessness of U.S. party conventions (Hoping For Harm Reduction - Aug. 23), David Shribman notes that they endure because, without them, U.S. political parties would hardly exist. So perhaps they are not pointless.
