In these Games, held in Helsinki, the Soviet Union won 71 medals, 22 of them gold. The United States won 76 medals, 40 of them gold. Coming from nowhere, the Soviet achievement stunned the world. Sports Illustrated proclaimed "the end of United States domination of the Olympic Games." The Soviet Union proclaimed the superiority of the Marxist state.
