Hyderabad, India A train derailed on a bridge as it pulled out of a southern Indian station Wednesday, and its engine and two coaches fell onto a fish market and parked three-wheel taxis, killing at least 18 people, officials said.
The train cars fell onto a road, smashing taxis as well as motor scooters, said Nalin Prabhat, the police superintendent in Andhra Pradesh state, where the accident occurred.
Police feared some people may have been killed in the crowded fish market under the bridge, as well as in the dangling coaches.
A railway official said at least 18 people had been killed, and Prabhat said at least 25 people were injured.
"The engine came down onto the road and is tilted on the road," he told New Delhi Television News.
But more passengers were inside carriages that were hanging precariously from the bridge, and the total number of dead would not be known until those cars were cut open, Prabhat said. A third carriage derailed but remained on the bridge.
The train was headed to Secunderabad, near the state capital of Hyderabad.
The accident occurred a few metres outside the Warangal railway station, 150 kilometres north of Hyderabad.
