Putin will ratify Kyoto, Chrétien says

Canadian Press

Bangkok — Russian President Vladimir Putin revealed his intention to implement the Kyoto accord in a one-on-one meeting with Prime Minister Jean Chrétien on Monday.

“He (Mr. Putin) said to me that he intended to implement Kyoto,” Mr. Chrétien told Canadian journalists gathered at the Asia-Pacific summit.

“He has some negotiation going on at this time on some elements of it. But it is the intention of his government to implement Kyoto.”

Earlier this month, the world's largest country had appeared to be backing away from the international treaty on greenhouse gases, which would have struck a considerable blow to the deal.

Canada has already ratified the agreement and Chrétien said he is convinced that his Russian ally would follow suit.
