Automatic Hotmail sign-in problems

Globe and Mail Update

QUESTION: I enter my password on my Windows 98se computer and tick "sign me in automatically" to access hotmail. If I go to another site and return to hotmail, I am frequently asked to re-enter my hotmail password. Occasionaly I can leave hotmail and re-enter without having to enter my password.

Is it possible to eliminate the password to enter or re-enter hotmail? I do not enter a password to access the system on startup. MSN messenger also signs me in automatically and I can access my hotmail inbox via Messenger...

ANSWER: Since your MSN Messenger logs you in automatically, we will assume it's not an issue with your profile (it doesn't eliminate the possibility, just makes it unlikely).

That leaves a software problem or a settings problem. If you have any software that deals with passwords or privacy (like Norton Internet Security, Gator, etc.), uninstall them.

If that doesn't solve the problem, open Internet Explorer and click Tools -> Internet options. Go through each of the tabs clicking any 'reset defaults' buttons you find. Then reboot the computer and try again.
