Remote procedure call error

Globe and Mail Update

QUESTION: I keep getting ¨remote procedure call service was terminated must shut down¨

What is it and how do I fix it?

Thank you.

Jerry Siggins

ANSWER: I hate to tell you, but you've got the BLASTER virus, or one of it's variants.

I assume you're PC counts down from 59 seconds and then shuts off or freezes, right? An immediate way to stop this from happening, so you can move on to the following steps to clear the virus, is to click on Start > Run and type: shutdown -a (then click on OK). That usually stops the process from shutting down your PC, giving you enough time to scan and clean the virus. You may have to do this more than once during the cleaning process, depending if the virus "wakes up" or not.

One of the easiest ways for you to clean this will be to go to the housecall website and do an on-line antivirus scan. (http://housecall.antivirus.com). I suggest a full scan, just because if you've got the Blaster, you might very well have others in there.

You will also want to head over to www.windowsupdate.com and install any "critical" updates that are available for your system. This is a safe site, and it's OK to click on "yes" when the download and install windows update software box pops up for you.

You may find that there are multiple updates, and you are asked to reboot your computer in order to install certain ones. It's best to keep going back to the windows update site after you've rebooted until there are 0 critical updates left for you to install.

It takes a bit of time, I know, but this is your first line of defence against any malicious software — plugging security holes in your Windows operating system.

I hope this helps you out,
