Can't play Web-based video

Globe and Mail Update

QUESTION:

Problem: My brother-in-law's Dell computer (Windows 98 SE) can't play a video from a website. It comes up with an error about being unable to play a file at that location. If I right-click and save the video to the desktop I can open it and play it with no problems so it isn't a codec problem. He is using IE6 with Media Player 9. I checked for the latest patches and updates, but nothing seems to help.

ANSWER:

It could be a problem with the Media Player plug-in or something else interfering with the process.

Check the Internet options for non-default settings, check for a firewall, ad blocker, or antivirus software that could be interfering. Scan for viruses and adware or spyware that could be causing problems with the browser.

If he prefers Media Player but has other players on his system (RealOne, Winamp), then remove them. If that doesn't fix it, uninstall and reinstall Media Player and Internet explorer if you can.
