The main event on the economic stage this week will be the U.S. Federal Reserve's interest rate announcement Tuesday afternoon, when the central bank is almost universally expected to boost its federal funds rate to 1.75 per cent. The view is based more on the rate's current low level than any confidence that the U.S. economy is emerging from its recent soft patch. Even with the slower pace of growth, economists see little to justify the federal funds rate of 1.
