Budget surplus hits $9.1-billion

Ottawa's federal budget surplus for the past year rose to $9.1-billion, almost five times the amount forecast in last winter's budget, Finance Minister Ralph Goodale said Wednesday. The boon extends the Liberal government's string of surpluses to seven but again raises the spectre of opposition criticism over Ottawa's forecasting abilities. In his first budget speech last March, Mr. Goodale projected a surplus for the fiscal year ended March 31 of about $1.9-billion.
