Martin cool to idea of national referendum on gay marriage

Montreal — Prime Minister Paul Martin was cool Sunday to the idea of a national referendum on gay marriage and said handling the controversial issue should be left to Parliament. "I think that this is an issue that Parliamentarians ought to decide," Mr. Martin said before addressing a brunch in his Montreal-area riding. "The courts have now given their direction.
