Subtle, sensitive and averse to self-promotion, Agnes Martin devoted herself to making art that speaks quietly but intensely to viewers with the patience to slow down and contemplate the idealized grid forms of her monochromatic canvases. She was influenced by the brash, vibrant qualities of American abstract expressionism, but instead of a loud confrontation with paint and canvas, her work veered toward the minimalist. But that is not to suggest she was intellectual or aloof.
